I know what you’re here for: you want to know how these beds feel to sleep on. I’ll go into detail on both firmness and feel in this section.

What’s the Firmness Of the Avocado & Saatva Mattresses? 

We rate mattresses on a firmness scale from 1–10, with 1/10 being super soft and 10/10 being extremely firm. Your sleeping position plays a big role in which firmness level feels the most comfortable. For example, side sleepers need a lot of pressure relief, which is typically found on medium-soft to medium-firm mattresses.

The Avocado mattress is available only with a 7/10 medium-firm feel, and we think it’s closer to firm than medium. However, you can add a pillow top layer that drops the firmness level down to 6/10. The Avocado is probably best for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a firm feel, but side sleepers will still get the pressure relief they need.

The Saatva mattress is offered in three firmness options: plush soft (3/10), luxury firm (6/10), and firm (8/10). The luxury firm is an ideal choice for back sleepers; it’s also the model we tested in our lab.

What Do the Avocado & Saatva Mattresses Feel Like?

The Avocado mattress, while firm, feels cushioning against your body. You’ll sink down slightly, but nothing significant. Latex foam is pretty bouncy on its own, so paired with coils, the Eco Organic mattress feels very bouncy and buoyant.

The Saatva feels very sturdy: you don’t sink at all near the edges and you stay elevated when you lie down. That being said, the pillow top does hug your body for a cozy feel.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Avocado & Saatva Mattresses?

The Avocado Eco Organic works for people of all sleeping positions, even though it’s on the firmer side. The latex foam does a great job of keeping pressure off of the hips, shoulders, and low backs of side and back sleepers. The firmness level and elevating feel of the mattress means it’s firm enough to keep stomach sleepers aligned. That said, side sleepers may want to opt for that pillow top for a more cushiony feel.

The Saatva Classic has a variety of feels because it comes in those three firmness options. Side sleepers will feel the most cushioned on the plush soft, back sleepers and couples will prefer the luxury firm choice thanks to the extra support, and stomach sleepers and heavy people will find the best alignment on the firm Saatva.

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Average-weight side sleepers will prefer the Avocado over the Saatva if they suffer from hip or shoulder pain, because it relieves pressure better. Side sleepers without that joint pain will still find great alignment on the Saatva.

Average-weight back and stomach sleepers should find both mattresses comfortable—it just depends on your firmness preferences.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

Heavy-weight stomach sleepers will find the best support on the firm Saatva: not only is it firmer, which offers more support, but it also has two coil layers to prevent sagging. Heavy-weight side sleepers will find better support and comfort on the Avocado; both should work for back sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Light-weight back and stomach sleepers should find good alignment on both mattresses. Avocado does the best job at supporting light-weight side sleepers because of that pressure relief, but they may find it too firm for comfort. Saatva won’t provide lighter side sleepers with enough pressure relief, but they may find the plush soft and luxury firm options more comfortable.

Comfort Layers

Avocado uses organic wool and firm, durable dunlop latex foam to cushion your body and add comfort to the mattress. Saatva uses a foam euro top and another layer of memory foam to do the same.

Support Layers

Both mattresses feature pocketed coils as their primary support core, but Saatva adds another layer of innerspring coils for even more support.

Avocado vs. Saatva Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Mattress temperature is a major factor for hot sleepers, especially when memory foam is involved. The design teams at Saatva and Avocado address the issue of temperature by using breathable organic materials in the respective mattress covers and incorporating lots of space for airflow between the coil layers. With that said, the Saatva sleeps a touch cooler, but you probably won’t wake up with night sweats on either bed.

Motion Transfer

If you’re a light sleeper, you need a mattress with minimal motion transfer. This performance category rates how well a mattress prevents your partner from jostling you with their movements. Besides letting you know if it’s a good mattress for couples, this factor is helpful if you expect midnight visits from kids or pets.

Generally, all-foam mattresses do a better job here than hybrid mattresses. We found that to be true in this comparison. Neither the Avocado nor Saatva impressed us with stellar motion isolation, but the Saatva did a slightly better job.

Edge Support 

Choosing a mattress with good edge support matters if you want to maximize your mattress surface. After all, no one wants to slip off the edge of the bed. It’s also a relevant factor if you plan to use the edge of your bed to get ready in the morning. 

Both of these mattresses earned above-average scores for edge support (Avocado received a 4/5), but Saatva’s high-density foam perimeter keeps you lifted better near the edges of the bed. It has some of the best edge support I’ve ever seen, so it got a 5/5.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is often measured using a pressure map on the mattress surface. When a tester lies down in various sleeping positions, our testing team can see exactly where high and low pressure zones lie. This category is especially important for side sleepers, since they tend to put a lot of stress on their shoulders and hips. 

The Saatva and Avocado are a little firmer: Saatva provides only moderate pressure relief while the latex foam of the Avocado did an amazing job of easing pressure for side and back sleepers. For additional plush, both brands offer the addition of a Saatva mattress topper or Avocado mattress topper.

Pain Relief

If you work from a computer, you’ve probably invested in an office chair or desk that helps you to have good posture, or spinal alignment. The same principle applies to your mattress. When you sleep, your spine should stay in a neutral “S” curve, otherwise you could develop back pain that, coincidentally, could keep you up at night. Rest assured that you’ll get near-perfect spinal alignment on both of these mattresses.

Durability

Mattress durability is determined by a few different factors, including construction, firmness, materials, and mattress use. Latex is one of the most durable mattress materials, so it follows that the Avocado is a durable bed. Pocketed coils are also durable, so we estimate both of these mattresses will last you at least seven to 10 years. Saatva may last you longer, however, due to its amazing edge support.

Shipping, Returns, & Warranties 

Avocado 

Avocado customers receive free shipping, including residents of Alaska and Hawaii. You can request in-home setup and old mattress removal for $249. Once your mattress is delivered, you get a 100-night sleep trial period. You need to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a return, and then you’ll receive a full refund (a maximum of one refund per household). 

Ninety-five percent of Avocado’s used mattresses are donated, and the other five percent are recycled.

The Avocado Eco Organic mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty. During this timeframe, you can receive free repairs or a replacement mattress if yours develops defects.

Saatva

Saatva is considered a mid-range luxury mattress brand. The brand only sells their products online, but they offer free shipping and white glove delivery (including old mattress removal) instead of bed-in-a-box delivery. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, you’ll need to request freight shipping from Seattle or California.

Customers are given a 365-night trial to test out how well their new mattress fits their comfort level. Returns and exchanges are free during the sleep trial, except for a $99 transportation fee. The Saatva Classic mattress is covered by a Lifetime warranty for the original owner. During the first two years of the warranty, you’re eligible for a free replacement mattress if yours is deemed defective. After that, Saatva will repair and re-cover your mattress for only $99. 

You can also choose the Fairness Replacement Option, which enables you to keep your original mattress and pay 40–80 percent of the original price, plus a $99 transportation fee, for a replacement mattress.

Our Final Take

So which bed is best for you? Avocado is better for joint pain, but Saatva is better for back pain. Saatva is best for luxury buyers, but you should go with Avocado if you’re on a budget. But if you’re a combination sleeper, hot sleeper, or a back sleepers, either option should suit you.

Avocado mattresses can last anywhere between eight to 25 years, depending on the model. The Avocado Eco Organic is a budget version of the Avocado Green mattress. The materials are still all natural and organic, but they should only last you about eight to 10 years.
